Project purpose or objectives

  • The purpose of this project was to write, edit, design and publish a self-help book. This would increase my skills in those areas, as well as provide me with something that I can show to future employers. Because my ultimate goal is to become a book editor, this project will show that I know the ins and outs of the book writing process.

The project

  • Here is a link to my book on Amazon!

Challenges encountered in completing the project

  • The biggest challenge that I had was with my time management. Because it was so self-directed, I really had to be on top of my personal deadlines, and make sure I was making enough progress each week to meet the “5 hours a week” requirement and ensure that I wasn’t cramming to finish my book during the last week of the project.
  • The second issue I had was I never knew when to contact my mentor. It was easier at the beginning, so whenever I had a question or a problem with the details of my book, I knew to contact him. At the end though, I had found a flow, and didn’t know how to make my mentor involved with that.

Project processes

  • There was a lot that I needed to do to get everything up and running on Amazon. The first part of the process was the initial research stage, where I came up with a book idea that was both something I could create and something that I found a need for. I ended up choosing a “Self-help” book style for College students that was centered on things that I’ve found difficult as a young adult, such as self-love, setting boundaries, prioritizing my needs, not making my grades the center of my value system, and so much more.
  • The second step was the actual writing of the book, which was the longest part of the process. Once I decided that I wanted to have one affirmation per day, I numbered every principle until I had 365, plus an introduction and conclusion for the book.
  • After I wrote everything, I went through everything multiple times to edit it and make sure that the book was free of spelling and grammatical errors, and that everything was worded exactly how I wanted it.
  • The next step was to format everything, and design the cover so that everything looked orderly and professional. For the formatting, I used an app titled “Kindle Create” so that I could easily publish it through Amazon Kindle. This included things like font sizes, style and spacing between the lines and words.
  • The final step was best part! Publishing the final book and getting it approved on Amazon Kindle.

An overview of the experiences you had

  • I had many great experiences throughout this project. I chose a topic that I feel like I needed to hear, and as I researched it, I learned so much about myself. There were so many great insights that I found and implemented as part of the 365 days, and I really hope that others can benefit from them just as I did. As I worked on this book, I found a flow that allowed me to work for hours without getting tired or discouraged. The hardest part was starting, but once I did that, I got so much done.

What insights or takeaways you gained from the project

  • What I am taking away from this project is that I am now a two-time published author! I can start a project such as this and finish it within a 14-week block. There are many things that go into publishing a book, and gaining all those skills can make you a well-rounded author, editor, publisher, or designer. And when you’re doing a project that you’re passionate about, you’ll have so much fun doing it!
